MATILIJA SANCTUARY

Bordering the banks of the Matilija River, nestled in a secluded canyon, Matilija Sanctuary and Hot Springs is a private residence and a registered historical landmark. By appointment, we allow visitors to enjoy the relaxing beauty of our mountain home. As the current stewards of this land, we welcome you to relax in the natural hot sulfur waters, cold mountain springs, and play in the flowing river and pristine beauty that surrounds us.
The property has various cottages, as well as a dining hall, meeting room and spa house that were used in the past to accommodate those that came to be nourished by the waters.

Prior to the Spanish missionaries, the Chumash, the indigenous people of this area, were sustained and supported by this land. Gathering nuts, seeds and berries, hunting venison and raising their families on the abundant fish that lived in the river. Their songs and dances still echo in the canyon walls. In 1872, backwoodsman J.W. Wilcox homesteaded here and others followed building resorts and tent villages centered around the medicinal uses of the hot spring waters. For over 130 years the forces of nature and influence of many have come and gone, yet the land remains a constant, a refuge for calm and peace of mind.
